 Lingula

SINGAPORE, April 17 1950: Two Indonesian sailors were killed, a tanker was burnt and 1,000,000 gallons of aviation spirit was set alight at the Anglo-Saxon Oil Company Depot on Pulau Samboe Island, 12 miles from Singapore, late last night.

After an explosion had occurred in a pump-house at the depot, fire broke out. The tanker Lingula caught alight and the flames quickly spread to aviation spirit tanks nearby.

It is thought that the two sailors died' in the burning ship. Ten men are reported to have been seriously injured, two, of them European-Mr. Roy Thompson, chief engineer of the tanker, and a seaman named Risborough. Ten members of the tanker's crew have been reported missing, but some of them might be on leave ashore. The fires are still burning to day but they are under control. Saving Ships And Men
