The sister ship to Ionic and Doric she sailed from Liverpool to New York on her maiden voyage in 1881.
 
In 1884 she was fitted with refrigerated holds and used on the UK - Tasmania - New Zealand - South America trade by the joint White Star / Shaw Saville service.
 
She was fitted with new engines in 1895.
 
In 1906 she was sold to Pacific Mail and re-named Persia .
 
Later in 1915 she was sold to Japan and re-named Persia Maru.
 
She was scrapped in Osaka in 1926.
