Laid down as Barrosa for the venerable firm of Thos. & Jno. Brocklebank of Whitehaven in Cumbria, this ship was launched as the Sobraon for the Elder, Dempster Line's African Steamship Company. By November she was being operated under charter on Brocklebank's route to Calcutta. But by July of 1891 she was back with the African Steamship Company sailing on its Liverpool to Baltimore service. In 1893 she was chartered to the Atlantic Transport Line and renamed yet again. As Mexico she continued sailing under charter on the London to Baltimore route.

On 4th July, 1895, sailing from Montreal to Bristol with general cargo, Mexico was wrecked near Belle Isle Lighthouse. All hands were saved.
