She was the first vessel used on the joint White Star / Shaw Savill & Albion service to New Zealand. she was used as a troop ship for the Boer War in 1900 / 1901.
 
During the war she was requisitioned by the U.K Government for the war effort ( liner requisition scheme ) she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UC.72 in the bishops rock vicinity.
