The Bay State, official number 109456, was a British steamship, built of steel, by Messrs. Harland and Wolff, at Belfast, in 1898, and her dimensions were as follows: Bp Length 490.3 ft., breadth 52.25 ft., and depth from top of beam amidships to top of keel 36.35 ft. She had four masts and was schooner rigged, and was constructed with six bulkheads. She had twin screws, and was propelled by six inverted direct-acting triple expansion condensing engines, of 755 nominal horse power, her speed being 12 1/2 knots. Her registered tonnage, after deducting 2,456.01 tons for propelling power and crew space, was 4,367.89 tons. She was registered in the Port of Liverpool, and was owned by the White Diamond Steamship Company, Limited (G Warren and Co.).
