The first diesel-powered ship built by Harland and Wolff, she was propelled by two Harland built B and W four-stroke cycle, single-acting auxiliary Diesel engines, each coupled direct to its dynamo and air compressor. Each of the main engines had six cylinders 26 3/8" (679mm) in diameter and of 39 3/8" (1000mm) stroke. With 105 revolutions per minute the normal horse-power was 1600 i.h.p. for each engine. Engines by the Burnmeister and Wein (Deisel Systems) Oil Engine Company.

Mississippi carried 578 tons of oil, and consuming some 10.8 tons daily. She was considerably more economical to operate than her conventional coal fired sisters. She was sold to P & W MacLellan of Bo'ness for breaking in August of 1933.
