 Martaban

[Ariana circa 1950]

Martaban survived the war, but had two narrow escapes. In 1941, in the North Atlantic she was coming home from Rangoon in convoy when a submarine alarm was given. The Mataban, was struck and damaged on her port quarter by SS Guido. Half the poop and the Indian crew quarters were wrecked. One Indian rating was killed and another missing presumed lost and a third injured. The ship was not making water, and was later able to rejoin the convoy, duly arriving at Glasgow with her cargo intact.

In 1942, when in the Bay of Bengal, the Martabam was struck by a torpedo, fired by a Japanese submarine. She was badly damaged and on fire forware and so abandoned. She did not sink however, she was towed into Colombo and later repaired at Bombay and returned to service.
