THE SOUND OF BRASS - David wins music award - (H&W News March 1982) A young lad with a lot of puff Seventeen-year-old David Ireland gives a smile for our photographer before demonstrating his talent on the baritone horn. David, who a first-year apprentice the Training Centre, was this year's winner Of the Samuel Bailie Musical Award for the apprentice or Office junior most involved in musical activities. A member of Symmington Memorial Band, David has been playing brass instruments for seven or eight years. He started on the tenor horn, learned how to play the euphonium while a pupil at Dundonald Boys' High School, and has now moved on to the baritone horn. And as if that trio of instruments wasn't enough to prove his virtuosity, David recently decided to learn to play the trumpet also.
