John was born in 1900 of Joseph and Mary Anne Scott, 72 Hatton Drive, Belfast. They had 8 children namely Joseph, Mary, Alexander, Archie, John, James, Bessie and Agnes. In the 1911 census Mr. Scott was a boilermaker. In 1901 the family had lived at 55 Portallo Street, Belfast.
On enlisting John took the alias of John Bennett
His mother received a War Gratuity of £6 and 10 shillings.
